PRESS RELEASE - NOVEMBER 16, 2009

 H1N1 Influenza Vaccination Clinics

H1N1 influenza vaccination clinics will be held at the Cherokee County Health Department's Rusk Clinic at 593 N. Main on Friday, November 20, from 1pm to 7pm and Saturday, November 21, from 8am to 2pm. Limited supplies of both injectable vaccine and nasal sprays are available.

Due to manufacturing delays, the H1N1 vaccine continues to arrive in lower-than-projected quantities.  Therefore, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified the following priority groups to receive the H1N1 vaccine at this time:

• Pregnant women

• Children 6 months through 4 years of age

• People 5 years through 64 years of age with high-risk health conditions

• Health care workers who provide direct patient care

• Close contacts of infants 6 months or younger

The following diseases qualify as high-risk conditions:

• Chronic lung diseases such as asthma, COPD or cystic fibrosis

• Neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, stroke, mental retardation

• Congential heart diseases, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease

• Blood disorders such as sickle cell disease

• Diabetes, kidney or liver disorders

• Those with weakened immune systems due to disease or medications (HIV    or AIDS, cancer, those on chronic steroid use)

• Those under 19 years of age receiving long-term asprin therapy

H1N1 vaccinations are being provided at no cost to the public.  As the H1N1 vaccine supply increases more priority groups will be targeted and later the general population.
